Series 7 passing score: 72, and the pass rate FINRA won't publish

You need a 72 to pass the Series 7. With 125 scored questions, that is 90 correct answers, and you can miss 35, a full SIE-length exam's worth of questions, and still pass. How the score works

Your screen shows 135 questions, but only 125 count. The other 10 are unscored pretest items FINRA is field-testing, randomly mixed in and unmarked, so treat every question as real. There is no penalty for guessing: a blank scores exactly like a wrong answer, so answer everything, and flag rather than stall. Scores are equated across exam versions, meaning a slightly harder set of questions is adjusted so every candidate faces the same passing standard. You cannot draw an unfair exam.

Is 72 curved? No, and equating is not a curve

Equating adjusts for question difficulty, not for how other candidates performed that day. Nobody has to fail for you to pass, and a room full of geniuses does not raise your bar. The 72 is fixed; the exam versions are calibrated to it.

What about the pass rate?

FINRA does not publish an official Series 7 pass rate. Sites quoting one to the decimal are estimating from their own student pools, which skew toward people who bought prep. What is safe to say: the exam is engineered to be passable by prepared entry-level candidates, most well-prepared people clear it, and the ones who do not usually name the same culprits, options, municipal bonds, and running out of stamina. The pass RATE matters less than your practice scores anyway: fresh full-length simulations in the low 80s mean the real 72 is in reach with margin to spare.

Score strategy for exam day

The clock gives you 3 hours 45 minutes for 135 questions, about 100 seconds each. Bank time on the fast ones, flag the long calculations, and come back with a clear head.
