What is the SIE exam? A plain-English overview

The Securities Industry Essentials exam, universally called the SIE, is FINRA's entry-level exam for the securities industry. It tests whether you understand the basics: what securities are, how markets work, what the major regulations say, and what conduct gets people banned. If you want a career selling or trading securities in the United States, this exam is almost always your first step.

The format, in numbers

You get 85 multiple-choice questions and 1 hour 45 minutes to answer them. Only 75 questions count toward your score; the other 10 are unscored pretest questions FINRA mixes in without telling you which they are. You need 70 percent on the scored questions to pass. The exam is administered at Prometric test centers or online with remote proctoring, and your result appears the moment you finish.

Who takes it, and why it exists

FINRA introduced the SIE in 2018 to split the old licensing exams into two parts: a general-knowledge exam anyone can take, and job-specific "top-off" exams like the Series 7 that require firm sponsorship. The genius of the split is the "anyone" part: students, career changers, and job seekers can pass the SIE before they ever apply to a firm, which turns it into a resume credential. Hiring managers at brokerages read a passed SIE as "this person is serious and I do not have to pay for their first exam." We cover the eligibility details in can you take the SIE without a sponsor.

What it covers

Four sections, weighted very unevenly: knowledge of capital markets (16 percent), understanding products and their risks (44 percent), trading, customer accounts and prohibited activities (31 percent), and the regulatory framework (9 percent). Yes, one section is nearly half the exam. The full breakdown, and what it means for how you should study, is in our guide to the SIE sections and weights.

What passing gets you, and what it does not

Passing the SIE does not license you to sell anything. It is the prerequisite half of a license: to become a registered representative you still need a firm to sponsor you for a top-off exam like the Series 7 or Series 6. Your SIE result stays valid for four years, which gives you a long runway to land the job. The relationship between the two exams is covered in SIE vs Series 7.

How hard is it?

Beatable with real preparation, dangerous without it. FINRA has reported that roughly three out of four candidates pass, and the ones who fail usually studied passively instead of practicing. Most people need two to six weeks; see how long to study for the SIE for timelines by background, and is the SIE exam hard for an honest difficulty assessment.
